Founded in 1901, the Carillion group today specializes in commercial projects such as offices, shops and leisure centers. It also offers a range of different services, such as mechanical and electrical engineering, consultancy, and the maintenance and management of infrastructures. It is thus responsible for servicing nearly a quarter of the British motorway network, and the management of the railway network of the giant Railtrack. It is also part of the government project Private Finance Initiative, through which it will take charge of large-scale projects on behalf of the public sector.
