Headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, Xstrata Copper is one of the commodity business units within the major global diversified mining group Xstrata plc. Xstrata Copper’s mining-metallurgical operations and development projects are distributed among eight countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, USA, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Peru. Xstrata Copper also has a recycling business (Xstrata Recycling) with plants in the USA and offices in Canada and Asia.
Xstrata Copper is the fourth largest global copper producer with attributable mined production in 2009 of 907,000 tonnes of copper contained in cathodes and concentrates. The company is also one of the world’s largest producers of smelter and refined copper, including from third party materials. Xstrata Copper expects to increase annual copper production by 60% to 1.5 million tonnes in 2015 through organic growth.
