  • Energy & Utilities
  • Ireland

Business Impact Summary

"Deploying Ventyx solutions has enabled us to leverage a common data model to improve decision support and to achieve significant cost savings."

PETER MURPHY, MANAGER
ENERGY MANAGEMENT CENTRE
ESB POWER GENERATION

ESB Power Generation (Ireland’s largest power generator) lacked a unit commitment and dispatch algorithm that can be consistently used across key business functions. ESB implemented two key Ventyx modules to meet the business needs of these multiple departments. The resulting solution enabled the organization to improve decision support and achieve significant cost savings.

The Challenge

ESB Power Generation lacked a unit commitment and dispatch algorithm that can be consistently used across key business functions including day-ahead nominations, production planning, market modeling and long term price forecasting, as well as a common graphical user interface and a database platform to support multiple departments and functions. ESB undertook a Business Capability Enhancement initiative to improve portfolio management and scheduling processes.

The Solution

ESB Power Generation implemented two key Ventyx modules to meet the business needs of multiple departments. Generation Operations module is used for short-term scheduling to produce day-ahead and weekly generation schedules, which are reviewed by ESB traders and sent to System Operator for day-ahead nominations. The application is also used to forecast gas requirements to support gas nominations and to evaluate short-term outages.

The Planning & Risk module is used by the ESB Production Planning group to produce a recurring production plan, support the annual budget/corporate reporting process and support the evaluation of maintenance outages. The production planning simulations are performed for a period of one to four years.

The Result

"The objective of our Business Capability Enhancement initiative was to integrate key business functions in order to provide ESB consistency across day-ahead nominations, production planning, marketing modeling and long-term pool price forecasting. Deploying Ventyx solutions to meet these needs has enabled us to leverage a common data model to improve decision support and to achieve significant cost savings. These have been realized through improved portfolio management and scheduling processes." - Peter Murphy, Manager, Energy Management Centre of ESB Power Generation.
